This photograph was taken in the Walled City located on the western bank of the Jordan River (in the lower Jordan Valley). It shows the interior of a building on the third floor of an old Jewish prayer house, whose walls are covered with a lively accumulation of pictures, drawings, poems and prayers. The photograph was taken in 1993, five years after the Walled City was dismantled, and reveals the remains of the once-plush dwelling, as well as its contents in fine condition. The Walled City was once home to thousands of refugees from Syria and East Jerusalem. The city had its own laws, courts and police. The Walled City was demolished by the Jordanian authorities in 1993 after a negotiation process that lasted nearly two years. The inhabitants were transported to settlements outside the city, where many continued to live to this day. The occupation of the city was portrayed in the film “Under the Open Sky” (Bechad Yakoba). The film was directed by Adar Biton, and produced in Israel. The Hebrew title is ‘Yehudim ad Mamlekot’ (People of Jordan).
