In this book, I refer to Photoshop as Photoshop Elements in some places, as this is the version of the program I use. However, Photoshop doesn’t actually have a layer-based editing system, and the layers in this book are features of Photoshop Elements.
To understand this book and how to use the layers feature, you have to understand what Photoshop Elements does. Therefore, I’ve used the descriptions of the tools in the book to describe layers and effects (discussed in the section “Applying Effects” later in this chapter), but you’ll need to know what Photoshop does with layers.
Some of the features in this book use layers, and some are not included in this book. In Chapter 5, for example, you learn about another tool called Quick Selection, which enables you to select and copy or move an object in an image quickly and easily. Not using the Layers feature with this tool means that you can’t select images you’ve already manipulated, and you can’t copy and paste your changes.
