ManyEars’s main function is to extract spatial information from a microphone array, which is basically the process of separating the different sources of audio so that you can then analyse and make use of that information in your application of choice, such as surveillance.

First of all you’ll need to decide how many simultaneous sources you want to be able to detect and the application requires the microphones to be pretty close to each other (less than 3 to 4 metres apart). The front facing microphones should be within a few metres of a sound source, but if you have more it doesn’t matter where they are, you just need the array to be fairly localised.

Efficient microphone arrays have a compact footprint which can be physically deployed on to walls, ceilings or even as portable arrays.

A microphone array has many sensors which are capable of detecting different sound frequencies as well as multi-channel audio. The array is designed to be placed as close to the sources of audio as possible, with the microphones facing the sources of audio.
The various microphones connected to the array are used to detect the direction and distance of a particular sound source. By using a microphone array, you can isolate and extract the information necessary to enable the tracking of a sound source and bring it into the centre of a virtual imaging device where it can be analysed, tracked and often found.

Making the array

A microphone array is the means of recording a wide frequency range of audio that is processed to give an audio source, direction, distance and velocity. By processing the audio signals from the microphone array, you can essentially see through walls and walls of furniture to find what is making the sound, where it is and from which direction.

You could connect 4 microphones to a computer, run it through audio software and you would essentially be listening to a picture of a room with the sound mapped to where it is coming from. A microphone array is more than that though, it is a way of using the different frequency ranges of audio which can be captured by the microphones to form a better map of the area that is being recorded. Some of this data can be processed and some of it can be left untouched. This is where the efficiency of the microphone array comes in.
