there’s a lot of back and forth with the purpose of these events, and they’re still far more like options than much more conventional races, which is a shame. but it’s still a hell of a lot of fun. the game is as much of a joy to play as it is an education in handling the various aspects of a gt4 car, with a brilliant user interface and a wide array of difficulty levels on offer. you’ll learn quickly that some cars are easy to drive while others require exceptional reflexes or patience. you’ll learn that some tracks are better to drive than others, and that you can change all aspects of the cars handling – for example, in the next game you might be able to adjust the weight distribution of the car, or the size of its tyres, which are all vital factors. likewise, you’ll learn that in gran turismo 4 cars are less like vehicles and more like hobbies.

as we’ve already established, gran turismo is all about training, and with your first car you can unlock a variety of training activities, from a tutorial to a three-lap race, (which is as much about learning what’s going on and honing your skills as it is about beating the clock and finishing first), up to the beginner grand prix. there are many more special events you can unlock through the game, as well as the ability to unlock new cars with special parts, which come in two types: ‘stealth’ (which you can only unlock by playing the game) and ‘competitive’ (which you can unlock through other means).

as you progress through the game, you’ll unlock more cars, which are pretty much the same sort of thing but you won’t have to start the game over and over again to drive them. instead, you’ll be able to skip the whole process and use the game’s teleporter, which can take you to the same race, circuit or event in the same car you used for that particular game, which is pretty convenient. but it’s clear that gran turismo 4 is about learning how to drive the cars, and not just learning how to use them, and this is where its problems begin.

gran turismo 4 is the ultimate driving game, and its a great thrill to see it looking and sounding so good. its also a pain in the arse that polyphony seem to be such a bunch of selfish wankers that they cant just let us play the game on the best system it was ever intended for. but what can you do? you can whinge about it, i guess, and if that means youre prepared to quit the game then good luck to you. or you can just ignore it. but if youre actually prepared to take some action then why not visit gran turismo 4 at the gran turismo 4 forum on gt.net?
i’ve got two games from the collection already: gran turismo 4 and gran turismo a-spec. and i can tell you that, while gt4 lacks the polish of gt5, its still one of the most playable gt games that ive played. it still gets the job done. theres no skips or frame rate drops and you can keep up with the action. driving inside the city is a blast, and you can even take the car through the streets of tokyo and admire the views. however, theres a couple of things that could have been done to make it a better game. and theres also a couple of things that just dont work. unfortunately, i cant talk about them here as they are part of my collection. but the game isnt just a great thrill to drive – its also an impressive technical achievement. one of the things i find most impressive is how the city is constructed in the game. theres no loading between sections of the track, and the tracks themselves are full of lots of detail. theres even tracks in place that have been remodelled or redesigned, such as the rekishi circuit in nagoya.
