anyway, i have some experience with that. i took an app’s xsd and created a wsdl file manually. it worked fine. besides being useful, wsdl is very useful in manual testing, especially with soap. the wsdl file would allow me to generate c# stubs for classes in the wsdl file. then i would test the code for business logic, and data validation. after that, i would generate sql, and do all the database creation, etc.. in addition, it was easy to translate the stubs and design to java, and android (or whatever language). in my example, i took an xml file, it’s configuration, and xml schema. i then created java or android stubs, and wrote unit tests against the java stubs. afterwards, i translated the java stubs to.net and c# classes, and wrote a unit test, and eventually a functional test. at that point, the code was largely green, except for the c# middle-ware. the only issue was the xml schema, but by looking up the xml structure by xsd, i could generate a simple.net or java stub.
after reaching this point, i wrote business logic using linq-to-sql with linqpad, and xunit, and building simple.xmls, then testing it for conformance. at the end of this process, i could build the c# middle-ware. to make it run on.net, i just created a new project in the solution, and in the constructor, added the following
i have a few people who have tried to develop android apps and use this, but it requires a pretty good background in xml. i know that’s why xmlspy is a great tool – you can just do a quick search, and come up with a generic, plug and play xml parser. i have created multiple xml parsers in the past to satisfy my customers. to recap, my example was xml for configuration, then xml for my database schema. i used sql to generate xml for my xml schema, then used this wsdl file, the xsd file, and the xml data to create c# or java stubs. this was useful because i could now write a unit test, and move on, assuming the next step was testing. when i could not test with a unit test, i created a wcf service contract, and it’s reverse proxy service, then generated wcf clients for it and used selenium to write a functional test.
i wish microsoft wrote something similar to this. for those who know microsoft’s tfs, it’s a great testing platform, but it has some issues. for example, it can’t tie a test case to a project, or a class.
