american english file second edition tests (levels starter to 3 only)
a new test for every file is now available, and includes listening, grammar and vocabulary, reading and writing sections. please contact your local elt consultant for the editable test documents, audio files and answer keys.
the main page gives you the number of words in the dictionary, and the number of entries you can search at a time. it also indicates the number of audio pronunciations and etymology links. from there you can choose from four views:
- search all the entries alphabetically, or by language
- search the words you have selected
- search for synonyms, antonyms, and related words
- search for the frequency of the word.
oxforddictionaries.com contains over 1.3 million words in over 9,000 entries, defining their etymology, pronunciation, synonyms and more. in addition, there are information pages on language, usage and etymology.
with over 100,000 definitions, millions of word uses and a large number of audio pronunciations, the oxford idioms dictionary contains all the tricks and shortcuts you need to get the right meaning in your head. and with 20,000 synonyms, you can be sure you have found the right words.
words in a dictionary are organized in alphabetical order. the oxford advanced learner’s dictionary of current english organizes words by their usage. it includes word parts, phrases, sentences, with audio pronunciations and a pronunciation guide. in addition, there is a handy dictionary search box.
oxford dictionary of english currently contains well over 350,000 meanings, phrases and words. it is therefore considered to be one of the most comprehensive smartphone dictionaries on the market. in addition to written text, there are more than 75,000 audio pronunciations; ideal for those who might not be native speakers. a handy search tool is also perfect while out and about, as words will be automatically completed so the user can choose the appropriate selection. there is even a fuzzy filter in the event that the user is unsure how a word is spelled.
so i think the point about the third edition is that they reflect where we are now. but it is not just the overall feel and feel of what we want to communicate that is different, but it is the way we are able to communicate more efficiently. i know when i started teaching, i was the only one doing it and i was very bad at it, so if i read my book now, i would not be too surprised that i would make some of the same mistakes, but i would look at it and think ‘i can improve that!’
so i was a professional company, so you might be wondering what i think about it. well, i think the lesson is taught better, it is easier to understand what is going on, and what the teacher and the students are doing, and it is easier to plan a lesson. the reason that it is easier to plan a lesson is because you have more time. so you can afford to plan a more complex lesson in the day. the difficulty is that the teachers have changed and so have the students, so the context in which the teacher uses that book is very different from when the first edition was written. so i think, for example, it is easier to adapt and use a current book because it is more easily accessible, but the students are more demanding, so they may demand that you use a certain book, so you have to use it, but at the same time it is difficult to adapt it because they are more demanding of the language and so you have to adapt to them, and the teacher has more freedom to create your own lesson. i think that the third edition has changed a lot, but i think that is true of all the editions. they just keep on getting better.
