bhyrappa has said that he is in favour of the idea of one book covering all eras of human history. in parva, he has gone a long way in carrying out that idea. it is divided into five chapters and is based on five epochs. its also possible to jump from one epoch to another.
from bhyrappa: the idea of this novel came to me when i visited a small village in the mountains of garhwal. there i was told of a village where the women were practising what is called in some parts of india polyandry. heres the story of how i came to write this novel. one day i found myself sitting on a hillside in the middle of a dense forest with a hill in front of me and a hill behind me. i was lost. i needed help. i sat there for the rest of the afternoon trying to figure out where i was. i started wondering about the pandavas, the kauravas, and the great battle that took place there. it was the time of the yudhishtirs reign. all these years i had been reading a lot of history.
he wrote to the author, in response to an advertisement he had seen in a journal, and asked him to write a novel set during that period. the author sent him an outline and bhyrappa started working on it. when he finished, he sent it to his brother who was a journalist and told him to print the book. they discussed it, and bhyrappa said: i will call it parva. my brother said: well you cant call it parva since parva means portion. bhyrappa said: you are right. he then asked his brother to change the title to kannada. i wrote the novel in kannada, translated it into english, and then printed it. the book came out in 1971.
