He reasoned that scripture rather than reason best serves to show the falsity of the views of Ibn Sina, Razi, and most of the earlier Muslim philosophers, because the latter had abandoned reason, and relied solely upon scripture, theology, and philosophy. He put forward the sole reason for neither believing nor disbelieving in the eternity of the universe is free will, because it is not possible for any creature, or any living being to choose to exercise this freedom if time had not yet been created. He argues that, “[i]n the absence of time, neither it nor any [other] living thing was able to exercise its free will.”[300]
The purpose of his counter-philosophy was, he said, to demonstrate that the creation of the universe does not violate any of God’s attributes, such as power, wisdom, justice, and good judgment, all of which he says are necessary for creation of the universe.
Ibn Taymiyya’s analysis of Ibn Sina’s arguments is that he was actually a weak philosopher, and not a great Muslim philosopher. Ibn Taymiyya claims that a great Muslim philosopher, like Ibn Rushd, uses both reason and revelation in his discourses. With regard to the belief in the eternity of universe, he argued that it is not even possible for a man to create, and that the universe has always existed, because we cannot create something that has already been created. He claimed that the belief in the eternity of universe is only reasonable in pre-eternity when there is no time, as the belief in the eternity of the world is unreasonable in the absence of time. He argued that this belief in the eternity of the world, as well as the belief in the time being created is reasonable if we “take account of angels”.
