it was a bizarre choice, given that this is not in the least a science book. its not that far from the american views about sex education. and yet it was written by a swedish academic who was a professor at uppsala, and it was translated into swedish and published in sweden in 1995. its a fascinating, fascinating book. the very first chapter is on the idea of sex as a normal human activity. its not an activity you can only do in the context of families, and its not only something between people in a relationship. its something that everyone, of any gender, of any age, at any time, in any context, should be able to do.
this was a bold move. its a very bold move. because obviously, in the developing world, in the indian subcontinent, china, south africa, the idea that everyone should have the same rights, that everyone should be able to have the same rights, that everyone should have the same rights, that everyone should be able to get an education is anathema. but this is not in our interests because we want young people in the developing world to be able to have the same opportunities that young people in the developed world have. this is very much at odds with what we want, and we dont talk about this, but its the reason why this kind of sex education is not in the interest of the developing world. and thats a shame.
the second chapter was on the history of sex education. it starts with the greeks and the idea that sex is meant to be a sacred activity. it moves on to the middle ages, where sex is about reproduction, and it moves on to late victorian england, where we get the idea that sex is a joyous activity.
it stands in a certain resistance to the impositions of the culture and in that sense, its a little more radical. and in the american context, thats why its a very, very hard book to sell. there were whole presses that rejected it, or didnt even bother to look at it. i dont know if it was ever in bookstores and i hope it wasnt in bookstores. its certainly not in most bookstores here. its not for sale in most bookstores here. but it was widely available in sweden and especially in its first year, it was on every school shelf. it was very much a part of the culture. and its amazing, of course, that its so invisible here in the united states. its very much a part of the culture and theres a lot of ignorance around it and people dont know that its here. but its very much a part of the american experience.
as far as i know, theres nobody translating it into english or any other languages, including swedish. its a very hard book to read. its a very revealing book. its a book that was written to get people into the subject, but it doesnt come out and tell you that you can be a good person if you have good sex. its not a love letter to sex. its not a celebration. its not a how-to book. it speaks more of difficulty, and how difficult it is, and how much pain people go through, and how much shame they feel and how some people never really experience pleasure. those are the themes. it doesnt tell you how to have good sex. its not about the act itself. its about the context of the act. and thats why it works well as a middle school or high school book because it speaks to teenagers in a way that adults cant. it gives them, i think, some perspective that they dont really have.
