While Maria Braun is no doubt about the importance of the domestic space as a key to Marias professional path and personal identity, it is not the only space. Most importantly, the film shows Marias business partners are similarly situated, occupying not only the dining table (for Banischer & Schrey), but the kitchen and dining room more generally. Indeed, Banischer and Böhm are married to Maria s own best friends, but they are also butting heads over how to expand Banischer and Schrey s business. She resists their admonition to take a non-brokerable luxury real estate contract, while Böhm wants her to go after the lucrative Soviet/Eastern bloc market. When Maria refuses to comply with Böhm s wishes, she escapes the business for the kitchen, where she eats and performs her domestic responsibilities during an interview for a potential job as a hostess (as a US GI with the club for the GIs that she met at the beginning of the film).
The kitchen of a house is a microcosm of domestic relations and a place of privacy. The kitchen serves not only as place of crisis and refuge for Marias mother, but also as a place where she thinks, where she receives guests, and where she performs her domestic duties. Although the point may be obvious, Fassbinder shows it with an emphasis on the history of the kitchen appliance, not just as a place where Marias mother can repair and ventilate the house, but also as a site for which that particular task is completed.
The kitchen is a site of domestic activities that the dining room subserves, but it is one that resists reification as a space for domesticity, and does so on a specific physical level. The kitchen reflects the fact that this space is the site of a historically specific, technological development. First, the kitchen is a site of technology; it is not a simple greasy spoon filled with the remnants of the various activities of each family member. Second, it is a site of transformation and, as that, of women s labor. Marias mother is shown cutting up vegetables while engaged in a particular domestic or hygiene activity: removing the gas when preparing the kitchen stove, for instance, or removing the wicker tray containing the sink, but also cutting the pears that the film has begun to define as a symbol of her femininity. All these activities are performed on a table that is placed to one side of the kitchen, and, unlike the meals to which the dining room is adapted, Marias mother is a’spectator’ of her own domestic life. Though Marias mom may be invited to the table only when there are guests, she is responsible for the making of each meal, as it is she who cuts up the pears.
