The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally begins Friday, and many attendees — some 2,500 at a recent estimate — ride motorcycles. For them, the rally is just a few miles outside Sturgis, S.D.

But for Mandy Crick, this weekend is a family vacation to the Black Hills of South Dakota. It’s the first time the South Dakota native is attending the Sturgis rally.

“I never thought I’d go,” Crick, 19, said. “I’ve never even been to the Black Hills. I just wanted to do something new and experience the culture and see how different the whole place is.”

Crick is from Lakeville, Minn., near the Minnesota border. She recently moved to St. Cloud, Minn., for school.

Crick, who works at McDonald’s, didn’t ride a motorcycle until last year. Her boyfriend and some friends convinced her to take a ride on a Honda.

“It’s a little scary at first, but once you get used to it you start loving it,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

She said she hopes to join the touring ranks once her college application is finalized. She is currently a sophomore at St. Cloud State University.

Crick’s attendance of the rally coincides with a trial. There were two riders killed in a motorcycle crash Saturday morning on U.S. 14. Both drivers involved in the crash were wearing helmets. One rider died and the other was injured in the crash.
