At the University of Michigans Central Engineering Graphics Facility, the CAD facility automatically launches at the start of the day. Engineers then use their AutoCAD for drafting, printing, and plotting. AutoCAD also is used for mechanical analysis, which is commonly used in the aerospace and automotive engineering fields.

Allies AutoCAD allows engineers to share all drawings, directly from the CAD drawing, with other engineers and with external parties. For example, you can save a CAD drawing as a Word or Excel document that includes annotated or tagged line and block definitions and a text box containing a brief description of the drawing. This allows you to store and display engineering data easily. AutoCAD can also share drawing annotations with external parties, such as a component list, without requiring communication by email.

In an interesting feature, AutoCAD allows you to share drawings by email to a company on an intranet or over the Internet, which could be used to communicate detailed engineering information to a contractor or production organization without having to send printouts. For example, engineers can use AutoCAD for drafting and plot tools to design a helicopter blade, and an AutoCAD-generated email containing the blades dimensions, geometry, and drawing can be sent directly
