In this article, we will be covering how to use:

normal / creative mode filters to quickly colorize black-and-white pictures

We’ll start with Colorize images.

The goal of this series is to focus more on image editing with PSE and try to highlight the beauty in its simplicity. If you are looking for full-blown photo editing with a lot of functions, we recommend downloading the Adobe Photoshop program. PSE is more suited for beginners who want to make their photos look better. You can use PSE to remove dust, fix red eye, change the color of the sky or any other filters that are commonly used in Photo Editing.

The Colorize effect

When you want to fix the color of your photo, the Colorize effect is the most commonly used. This filter can work when you use the normal mode filter but only when the mode filter is set to sepia.

The idea of sepia is that the object being colorized will appear in a more reddish tone. The colorizing effect will then be applied to this image.

When you select the Colorize filter in the photo editor, you will see an option to set the sepia tone (also known as the warm sepia tone) from grey to black. If you use a light gray sepia tone, you will give the photo a faded look. If you use a dark gray sepia tone, you will give the photo a more distinct, dark, reddish color.

You can use the difference in tone to highlight or darken certain elements in the photo.

As you can see in the first image above, the filter has separated the photo into the background and foreground. If you lower the sepia tone to 5% and change the blending mode from Normal to Soft Light, you can easily make the sky darker without darkening the actual foreground object.

We’ll explain blending mode in the next section of the tutorial.

* **Brush** : A brush usually makes large strokes. Brushes are useful for blending two colors together, cleaning up marks on your image, or drawing objects such as a circle. For example, you could use a brush to paint out the background of an image and fill it with a new color.

Use this menu to open the Brush panel (Figure 7-21, top). It’s great for choosing a brush’s size, shape, and type. Here are the settings:

* **Brush Sets** : You can use the Brush Sets panel to choose from an array of predefined brush sets. Photoshop comes with a few sets, such as watercolor brushes, oil brushes, colored pencil, floral, brush tip, and film/video, among others.

* **Brushes** : The Brush panel offers a variety of brushes (Figure 7-21, bottom). You can select from a set of predefined, numbered brushes, or make your own, just like you would with any other tool.

* **Brush Tip Shape** : This menu gives you options to determine the shape of the tip of your brush (Figure 7-22). It’s helpful when you’re trying to produce a small, precise object, such as a hair, feather, or brush stroke. There are four options, ranging from a large, soft brush tip to a jagged, hard brush tip. Each shape makes a different type of brush tip.

Figure 7-22. Because Brush Tip Shape determines how your brush strokes look, it’s helpful to be familiar with the options. Here are some examples of four different brush tips: the tapered, large, medium, and small brushes.

* **Style** : Here’s where you can choose the look of your brush, from how the brush is drawn onscreen to the color of the brush itself. Choose the Pickup From Layer option if you want the texture and colors of the existing layer to show through the brush.
