The Layers Panel
The _Layers panel_ enables you to create effects and manipulate elements in your image by arranging multiple overlays. The Layers panel and all changes to your image that are made with the Layers panel are displayed in a grid-like arrangement, which you can see in Figure 2-1.
The Layers panel is a _placeholder_ — that is, the Layers panel is there only to help you lay out your elements so you can see them well. All you actually see is the image you have loaded from your camera’s memory card or the computer that has opened the file.
To view what you’re working on, press the Tab key. This turns off the Layers panel and displays only the image. When you’re ready to work, you can press the Tab key again and see the Layers panel, your work, and the Layers panel settings that you’ve created.

When you work with layers, you may find it helpful to switch between using the Layers panel and using Photoshop’s full tools. For example, you can easily change the order of your layers in the Layers panel, whereas you can’t do that in some other areas of the program.
Figure 2-2 demonstrates how you can create a new layer and add an adjustment layer.

Step 1: Prepare the Text
Open your photo in Photoshop and create a new layer. Duplicate the layer so you have two.
Duplicate the layer once again. Open up your text tool and draw on the layer. Click once to create the first character and then click twice to create the second.
Remove the new layer by right clicking the layer and hitting Delete Layer.
Click the magic wand tool and select the white box. Click once to select the first text in the photo and drag it back a bit. Click twice to select the second text.
Create your second character right above the first. Change the font to the stylish font of your choice.
Step 2: Create a Text Layer
Go to Layer > New > Layer. Name the new layer Text.
Add a new layer and name it Layer 1. Hit Ctrl+T to open the text tool and draw the text.
Step 3: Repeat the Steps
Enter Edit > Copy and then enter Edit > Paste to create new layer, Text 1.
Add the second character to the new layer right above the first. Change the font to your choice.
Step 4: Edit the Text
Add the text to Text 2 and change its color to black. Use the paintbrush tool to recolor the second character.
Change the font to a high-fashion font.
Step 5: Duplicate the Text
Duplicate Text 2 and name it Text 3. Go to Layer > New > Layer and then go to Edit > Copy.
Use the eye icon in the top left of the Layers panel and drag the copied layer up a bit to create Text 4.
Duplicate Text 4 and change the color to black. Change the font to a simple font.
