IBA has grown from the first national convention in Chicago in May 1968, at the request of the National Federation of Bookstores.

Also in 1970, the organization published The Independent Bookseller’s Handbook of Ethics and Business Practices, a five-chapter summary of the NFB’s bookstore guidelines. In the same year, the organization also began publishing The Independent Bookseller, a newsletter written by IBA members.
