iphone dev team ipsw ipswFor the first time ever, scientists have cloned a cat. And it’s not your standard kitty: the cloned cat looks more like a horse than a kitten.
The “hybrid cat” was created by artificially inflating and removing genetic material from another cat’s embryos, according to an article published in the journal Science. That’s the same technique that enabled the cloning of Dolly the sheep, but in this case, researchers hope to use the cloned cat to learn more about the healing potential of blood-forming stem cells. The stem cells, derived from the cat’s placenta, generate more red blood cells than stem cells derived from conventional blood banks, said Darren Griffin, a professor at the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine who led the cloning effort.
“The cloning of the cat provides us with a unique and powerful model for studying the biology of blood formation,” Griffin said. “Because cats make a lot more red blood cells than humans, they are better suited to study the biology of blood formation and the different stages of hematopoiesis.” [5 Creepiest Human Origins: Fossil Evidence]

Stem cell techniques could someday enable endangered species to be cloned. That’s because just a few cells from an endangered species, including tigers, could provide sufficient stem cells for each embryo created through these techniques. Once cloned, the embryos would be implanted into surrogate mothers, and the offspring would be raised in captivity. The offspring could then be reintroduced into the wild if it’s necessary, according to a 2014 article from the Department of the Interior. This idea, known as assisted reproductive technology (ART) conservation, could also help preserve endangered species in captivity.
