the microcontroller, whose software and firmware is distributed under the gpl, is a 32-bit mcu whose analog and digital i/o pins are connected to the teensy 3.2 mcus internal bus. the mcus digital i/o is sufficient for sending step commands to the stepper motors, turning the spindle on/off, and monitoring the three limit switches that are defined in the mach3 application. to emulate the keyboard, i configured the mcu to send keystrokes to the software running on the pcs parallel printer port. the mcu also contains an internal interrupt that is used to send keystrokes to the software running on the serial port. i used the teensyduino add-on, which is a teensy 3.2 mcu with a usb port that serves as a serial interface, to send keystrokes to the serial port software running on the pc. a software serial port would work just as well as a usb serial port, but a usb serial port is easier to interface with (see the teensyduino add-on example program, usbserial.ino).
figure 5 shows the pendants build flow, and how to build it. to define the functionality of the pendant, the first thing i did was to build the teensy 3.2 add-on [4]. figure 6 shows the first pjrcs teensy add-on example program (a2021) [4] (more on the add-on in the next month). ive been using this add-on to build pendants since i retired from my cnc machine 10 years ago. figure 7 shows the pjrcs teensy 3.2 add-on example program (usbserial.
here are some sample screenshots from an operating my mach3 pc with a cnc mach3 interface using the usb port. i have built a rotary encoder assembly for the cnc mach3, which is shown in figure 8. you may notice that my encoder is “3-3-3”. this means that there are three small knobs, each of which controls one of the three cnc axis. the encoder is attached to the shaft of the spindle/toolhead, with the encoder knobs mounted inside the spindle housing. the encoder is programmed to increment by 5 units when the spindle turns 1 revolution. this 5 units increment is shown in the screenshot infigure 10. if the spindle rotates 1 revolution, it will have turned 5 units. this means that when i use the encoder to turn the spindle, i can step the spindle at 5 increments (100% increments) per turn of the spindle.
3) first time use of a new profile requires that the profile be saved on the hard drive, and the profile selected in mach3 (as shown in figure 10). there are also some profiles that are designed to be used as templates, and these are already selected in the mach3. theres not really a good reason to not keep the profiles on the hard drive for backup purposes.
5) mach3 is a bit like the office suite of programs. you need to have a way to run a programs output, and a way to save the output for use in other programs, but there is no easy way to actually edit the program. mach3 has several options, but these are basically just ways to save the program and output. you cant easily go in and edit a cutting program.
6) mach3 has several modes of operation. the default mode is called mach3. the easiest way to get started is to change the way that mach3 runs, which is done by clicking on the profile tab on the mach3 main window. theres a few options, including mach3 window. there are some good reasons to run mach3 in this mode, but for the average user, it is basically the same as mach3 window, except that you cant select profiles.
7) as far as navigation, mach3 is simple, and not particularly intuitive. mach3 has two modes, referred to as the preview and the mach3 window. the mach3 window is the main window of mach3. the preview is the section of the window that displays the gcode program. when youre running the machine, mach3 will run the preview window constantly. its easy to navigate, and you can easily see what youre cutting. its the most intuitive way to use mach3. you can also set the program to run the preview all the time, but that just adds a bit of clutter.
