During the early stages of Southside’s takeover, 2Pac along with several others like The Outlawz and fellow Compton Crip Kodak Black were signed to Thug Life Records in order to create their own label. The label at first would include only a few artists however quickly their roster would expand to include members of the Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dogg, as well as group consisting of rappers from the Harlem, New York scene like Game and Common.

During the earliest stages of Southside Compton, 2Pac was the leading face of the label, and he worked closely with Suge Knight to build up Thug Life Records. After serving a prison sentence for murder, and successfully running a business empire, 2Pac launched his own label Tha Row Records. However, he later became dissatisfied with his life in the music business. He grew tired of having no say in the direction of his record label. He found himself imprisoned again, and sought to break free.

Aftermath’s first album,The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, was released on March 23, 1996. 2Pac would later say that his first record for Aftermath,All Eyez On Me, which was released a year later, was his best album. It sold over 5 million copies worldwide, and was certified 4x Platinum (selling over 4 million units) by the RIAA.

2Pac’s second album for Aftermath,All Eyez On Me, was released on November 16, 1997. It was a departure from his previous albums, featuring a harder edged vocal performance with violent lyrics, as well as references to violence and firearms. It was his most successful album, selling over 10 million copies worldwide and certified 4x Platinum, with over 4 million sold in the US alone. Although he is traditionally known for his song “Me Against the World,”All Eyez On Me features the title track as the opening song, and contains many other heavy songs including “Hail Mary,” “Against All Odds,” “Me Against the World,” and “I Ain’t Mad.” The album was certified Gold in just 30 days, despite its controversial subject matter.

His final album,Natural Born Killaz,was originally recorded in a Polaroid studio in San Bernardino, California. The album was released in December of 1996. Upon its release, Death Row found itself without a signed single to radio, and following the failure of the song “If I Should Die Tonight” to reach the top of the charts, Suge Knight stepped in and demanded that he stop paying royalties to Death Row. The album, which was originally intended to have a double platinum certification, is infamous for a poorly-received song called “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted”, which was censored so as to muffle the profanity. 2Pac’s death in September of 1996 prompted Death Row to disassociate itself from him and his music, much to his displeasure; as he said, Death Row “took away from the streets”.
The album was named after Death Row Records’ “street code”, their set of rules regarding what types of music to distribute from their label. From it’s title to its cover art, there is a constant reference to making drugs and doing drugs. The album is also adorned with the 2Pac brand, allowing the artist to continue to control his image and brand while in prison. The album opens with the gothic and gloomy slow groove “Toss It Up”, with an industrial feel, featuring a sample of the nursery rhyme “Mary, Mary”. Unlike his other albums, it lacks many samples, there being only one sample, a looped rap from 2Pac’s unreleased song “She’s A Hater”. The second track, the diss track “Hit ‘Em Up”, mocks many of his enemies, most notably Mafioso Puff Daddy, Suge Knight, Puff Daddy’s Bad Boy Records partner Sean “Puff” Combs, The Notorious B.I.G., and even two Death Row Record executives. There is controversy regarding the subject of this track, as some claim that the diss to Puff Daddy is what he had provoked the 1995 shooting of Tupac by Marion “Suge” Knight. The groove of the song itself was named a single, “Hit ‘Em Up”, but it did not match the popularity of the album version. The song also mentions The Notorious B.I.G., claiming that the rapper is his protégé, however it is likely that the title was changed to “Hit Em’ Up” to differentiate it from “Lay Me Down” by 50 Cent. In the liner notes to the album, 2Pac mentions being ‘game’ for the battle of the east-west rivalry between East Coast rappers Biggie and Nas as well as Ill Will Records’ East Coast/West Coast rivalry over the street credibility of the Cold Chillin’ Cali and The New York City cliques.
