here, we investigate the effects of a dual-frequency tacs stimulation protocol in the primary motor cortex (m1). theta-gamma coupling is a ubiquitous phenomenon in the brain and is often observed in motor cortex, but the functional role of theta-gamma coupling is still a matter of debate. we show that a dual-frequency stimulation can increase the gamma-band power of m1. this effect is stronger for cathodal tacs and a dual-frequency of 1hz/80hz and it is diminished for anodal tacs. the dual-frequency stimulation did not lead to any significant changes in the power of the alpha and beta frequency bands. the results support the idea that gamma-band power increases as a result of theta-gamma coupling and suggest that theta-gamma coupling could play a role in motor coordination and might have an influence on motor learning.

an accurate model of the subthalamic nucleus (stn) is essential for a range of motor control tasks. here, we investigate how the biophysics of stn neurons affect model behaviour. we build the model of stn on the basis of recent experimental results on single stn neurons, which suggests the existence of two types of stn neurons: fast-firing type 1 (ff) and slow-firing type 2 (sf). we develop a model of a neuron that is able to reproduce the experimental results on the two types of stn neurons. we demonstrate that the two types of stn neurons affect the model behaviour in a different way. while the ffs are able to display a variety of oscillations and the sfs display only one, the ffs are able to display a variety of oscillations and the sfs display only one, the slow oscillation. we investigate the influence of the number of synapses on the fast oscillation (fo) and we show that it is influenced by the number of ffs synapses. moreover, we show that the amplitude of the fo is influenced by the number of synapses as well as by the number of sfs. we then investigate the effect of stn neuron biophysics on the theta band oscillations (obe). we show that the stn model with the ffs and the obe is able to display a variety of oscillations; we identify one of these as a fast oscillation and we investigate how the obe influences the fast oscillations. we also show that the stn model with the ffs and the obe is able to display the slow oscillation; we identify one of these as the obe and we investigate how the obe influences the slow oscillation. finally, we investigate the effect of stn neuron biophysics on the beta band (bb). we show that the stn model with the ffs and the bb is able to display a variety of oscillations. we identify one of these as a slow oscillation and we investigate how the bb influences the slow oscillation. we also show that the stn model with the ffs and the bb is able to display the slow oscillation; we identify one of these as the bb and we investigate how the bb influences the slow oscillation.
