the library comes in two formats: 1) 1.2gb zip file containing the main ui and additional daws, and 2) a vst 2.0 plugin for windows which uses the bundled vstplug.exe to integrate into your current daw. there is no code, and no license needed to use the vst version of the library, but the zip file also contains numerous example sessions and tutorials that show you how the gui is set up and how to control the various articulations. this does come at a price, however, as the download is a 3.3mb dcr file while the vst is a 2.4mb file so it’s a big download. not that anyone will care for the most part, because once you get the hang of the interface, this library is very simple to use.
unlike the previous version, it makes no distinction between cellos and violas, so they’re either played separately or mixed together. if played separately you can select the position, the solo or the ensemble mode and thus the sections are self-explanatory. you can toggle the bridge from the main gui as well as configure and control the legato parameters via various switches. (there are also master volume, master mute, pan and level controls). each legato mode has been tweaked to be best suited for solo and ensemble playing. the run mode, as mentioned above, takes things to a whole new level. you can set up one or multiple runs of varying speed and time using various filters (such as glissando, tremolo, crunched tremolo, glissando + tremolo, allpass + tremolo, double allpass + tremolo) and control the length of the runs via a velocity-sensitive keyswitch.
sadly, these legatos don’t support bypass, so unlike hollywood strings we can’t pass the notes on to our other instruments, but hey they get the job done with great results, and it’s nice that you can use all the other articulations even on strings.
there are a few small niggles, the most trivial of which is the lack of a performance statistics screen (i’m a fan of displays like this). the entire library is laid out rather discretely, with every instrument hidden away in its own sub-directory, and tabs providing access to less frequently used functions. the most obvious exception to this is the song, file and defined parameter tabs, but for those more accustomed to samplingtools there are no pages at all and even the “newest” features aren’t immediately apparent. another oddity is the lack of a browse function, although it’s easy to find the right file (again, context should make that easy enough) just as long as you’re reasonably sure the file you want is in the folder you want it in.
the library’s profuse display of midi commands helps you navigate through the tabs and functions, though you can’t adjust the time signature of the piece from within the editor. the newly added legatos and muting effects certainly add to the experience, and the library’s huge scale means your compositions will never sound unembellished, but once you’ve played around with the interface a bit there’s little to commend cinematics more. less is more is one of the sayings i’m sure you’re aware of already: here it should apply even more rigorously, especially if you’re a new user or one who’s used the original library for a few years and perhaps dabbled in a few patches. cinematic’s owners really need to move more of their content onto the kontakt player in a way that respects the userspace of the sample library, because this is still being explored in some places (and, incidentally, you can still use the old media player in cs2.0).
