the movie is a satire on the corruption in the film industry, the big power players and the people of power who make the film industry so damn corrupt. it depicts how the corrupt people think, operate and survive. the people who can’t help but be corrupt. the power brokers who manipulate everything. the innocent actors and technicians who turn a blind eye to the unlawful activities. and, the people who let them get away with their crimes. this, by the way, is what is so much brilliant about once upon a time in mumbaai. it sheds light on a part of bollywood which has been left untouched so far. it’s a great tale!

the story is simple. a leading man, in deep trouble, thinks of a way of lifting the funds. he believes that killing his girlfriend will do the trick. he has another strong accomplice. the two together, acting in league with a mental patient is the primary player in the murder.

when ajay devgan is seen drunk in the video (made by his actor friends, of course), you ask whether he’s going to act realistically. this is such a fresh film and a fresh take on the heart-warming story. the actor need not learn how to act for this role and be a 100% believable. he takes his character far away from that and you’re mesmerised by his transformation.

once upon a time in mumbaai steals your heart and you still love it even after its release date. the movie’s directing, script writing, acting, post-production, visual effects, editing, music, cinematography, editing and art direction are a treat to watch. the film would have been a total washout without these elements. you see the character portrait through the lens of rajat aroraa and his scriptwriter team to succeed in presenting the shades of the character. it’s a hoot as well as a heart-warming tale.

this is the story of a mob boss, sultan (ajay devgn) who has nothing to do with drugs, but is in fact a smuggler. he doesn’t have an easy life, and is constantly bothered by the police and goonda elements. he’s not the least bit bothered about the latter. his buddy, bobby (imran khan), is a petty criminal who works for him as an informant. they meet with inspector puri (manish dayal). in a bit of poetic justice, puri turns out to be a well-wisher with a hidden agenda-to catch the real goonda boss and expose his network of informants. under different circumstances, puri may have helped him. would sultan have ever suspected him of being a friend? the film will enable you to decide!
it’s a black and white tale, with lovely scenes that are lit by some really amazing shots. the photography is brilliant, particularly by cinematographer sadhu meher and his team. the cinematography in general is a treat to watch. production designer ajay rai gives us some gorgeous and trendy interiors and sets. the costumes are interesting, beautifully designed and shot. and i would like to particularly draw your attention to the shooting of the song sequences. i’m telling you this because i was blown away by the cinematography here, which was so imaginative. the film, with its intertwined story, dramatic narration, interesting music and an interesting locale, is a good watch. you will be sad that it has such a small audience, but the movie is a little gem that should be appreciated.
