then i heard some other guys were using the fundy designer for images they imported into it and then imported into my own album company, so i thought i would investigate that too. so im comparing the two for the first time in months and weeks and this is how i got on. ive been using the fundy designer for a while as an image importer and album builder to import, manipulate, and export images. as mentioned earlier i also use the software for quite a while now and thought i would review it for you.
before i look at it in detail i need to mention my software setup. i use adobe photoshop cs6 with the acr raw converter as my main image editing software. before getting to the review, here is a look at my workflow. i use two monitors and both are 1920×1200. i work full screen on the left monitor and keep my right side for documents. i use the right monitor as a separate workspace when working on images, or when i am creating layouts. the software im reviewing for you today is fundy designer, v6, and fundy designer album builder, v8, although i have not tried fundy designer album builder, v9. it works pretty well as a standalone. but i have found the import tool to be far more powerful if you have photoshop and have access to your images in acr. for example, i have a folder of over 10,000 raw images. using the fundy designer i can preview all the images at once, which i like as i can adjust all the settings at once. then i can review the changes using the timeline. i also like the way that the software is set up as you can choose to preview one image at a time or all 10,000 in one go (if you dont have 10,000 images this wont be possible). i like being able to use the timeline to move and arrange the images as i go. the software gives you a lot of options to arrange the images and that is really important when you are working on a big batch of images as you can use it to design and layout your albums before exporting to other software.
fundy has a unique way of displaying the photos in a layout. you can have a photo appear in one place, and then drag it to another spot on the page, and itll open into a preview window. you can see that this is the actual file location, you can delete the image or any of the other formatting you see in the preview window. theres not much you cant do with an image in fundys preview mode. fundys photo tool still works in this mode, so you can continue to manipulate an image while youre previewing it. if youre in either non-preview mode or in the standard preview mode, when youre finished you can simply drag the image back onto the page and itll go back into the layout where you originally inserted it.
fundys user interface is very flexible. ive used it for branding, photography, interior design, and because its quick and easy to load media, ive used it for a whole bunch of different purposes. fundy is designed around the concept of the drop zone, something you can do a lot of things with. for example, you can move around a photo in a layout by dragging it to a drop zone, you can automatically place it in a layout in any position you want, you can move a photo between layouts, you can resize a photo in any of the preview modes, you can crop a photo, you can rotate a photo, you can adjust contrast and brightness, you can add or remove metadata like date and description, you can copy and paste an image to and from the clipboard, and you can share layouts and photos on facebook, twitter, and other social media channels.
i had looked at smartalbums on the mac before trying fundy, and i think its one of the reasons i moved away from smartalbums. fundy didnt work as well on the mac as i thought it would, and i didnt feel like it was giving me the full album design experience that i was hoping for.
