hd’s feature set is almost the same as the playstation 3 version, differing only in resolution and frame rate. since the game is a disc, there are no online capabilities in the form of leaderboards and access to events, and there is no unlockable content to access the online mode.
however, the game does contain both the “hd” and “ps3” versions of the game, allowing players to play as either carl johnson or toni cipro on either console or for both consoles. these versions are installed separately but, due to the fact that the psn works differently on the ps3, certain features only appear on the ps3 versions of the game, such as the appearance of troyzan as a playable character and the “hd” feature.
in the pc version, players may play as either carl johnson or toni cipro. while the differences between the two are minimal, the playstation 3 version features additional content such as unlocked missions and outfits.
like the playstation 3 versions of gta san andreas and gta liberty city stories, the pc version also features higher-resolution graphics; and has better-looking and detailed interiors than the playstation 3 version. the pc version is exclusive to steam, and features cross-platform multiplayer, in-game voice chat, and an updated environment.
on foot movement is similar to previous games in the series with the exception of cars being more easily put into reverse – done by simply pulling back with the left analog stick. once a person is selected, they walk around freely with the ability to jump on hover or simply double jump on standing or crouching (they must be in the air and press the jump button to change stances). in the event a person dies, they can be restored via a save screen featuring “last resort mode” which heals the player as quickly as possible. entering cars is done by pressing the on-screen button (usually on the right), and exiting them is done by pressing the on-screen button and leaning forward. once inside, the hud is visible on the dashboard with toni watching the front of the vehicle with the left analog stick. the controls of the mobile version are also intuitive – once a vehicle is chosen, the player must press the right analog stick to cycle through weapons (taking the vehicle into that weapons’ inventory). there are two microphones included in the mobile version to enable players to use the game boy player and fm radio in combination with an included adapter.
still, it is no secret that the game as it eventually came out was not what rockstar originally intended, and that it was re-shot in san andreas. this is why the game comes bundled with a number of map edits made by the community, such as liberty city, boston, and san francisco.
liberty city is divided into nine districts, which are vaguely to the east of new york. the game also features a modular level editor. as such, it is possible to create very detailed maps by combining the four districts, the eight districts, or virtually anything in between.
i’ve added a few new features to this mod. the most notable is the ability to create your own starting location. what i mean is that the game now gives you the option of choosing your starting location within the city. the new buildings are nearby, but you can’t instantly start at the shoreline. rather, you must start in a residential or commercial district. while this may not be a huge deal for players following the game in its original order, considering that san andreas is now a huge part of the game, it’s an important feature.
the new content is almost complete. only a few more levels are left. once that is done, i will release the level editor in the game to the public (as long as i get permission from the map maker). after i do that, i’m going to add more customization options to the editor.
the reason i started this mod was to make the original liberty city stories engine as close as possible to the gta san andreas engine. that engine is the most complex and fully featured game engine ever released by rockstar, and is what is used in most of the other san andreas mods. so why not try to recreate it in a game such as liberty city stories?
