before the game even loads up, you can see the waters edge, and a message explaining that super mario 64’s difficulty isn’t meant for newcomers. the difficulty slider isn’t immediately accessible, so you’ll have to search the game’s code for a function called get difficulty. once you find it, head to the appropriate section of code and enter the desired difficulty level, which can be increased by hitting boost. several options including the “hard” difficulty level exist. here you can see the game resets mario’s boost value to max out the difficulty, making the game an absolute nighmare for would-be plumbers. it’s unclear what the boost max currently is, as i only loaded up the game once to take this screenshot.
the statue of the king of red lions was the main antagonist of the original super mario 64, trying to destroy the kingdom with his unstoppable fireball. while this foe never made a second appearance in the sequel, you can use his mask to scare mario into submission in the title screen.
while mario’s in the castle, king bowser pops in to tell mario that he’s been collecting his enemies for a special occasion. you can also see luigi get his star powers, and the second non-playable guest star.
this explosion came from the player who stumbled upon the “toadstool stars” glitch in the original super mario 64. as noted in our previous feature, the glitch itself came from an unknown player feeding the toadstool star into the game’s save slot, which, when activated, brings the game over to the retro world, but with some bugs. had this player not activated the save, mario would have drowned to death.
the first half-life mod is still a favourite of many half-life players and fans. released as a standalone game in 1998, half-life was a beautifully realised action fps set inside an enormous research facility, with a cast of characters that included an unpleasant ai scientist and the always-enigmatic protagonist of the game – himself. more than 14 years on, this mod is still only available in its original form, and yet valve has never fully supported its development. half-life will long be remembered for its low-fidelity standalone single-player experience.
a half-life mod released in 2000 was total alien takeover, a mod that turned half-life’s iconic gordon freeman into a run-of-the-mill annoying alien invader complete with an h.r. pufnstuf impression. in fact, the mod included a new character creator that made possible the creation of any race the player cared to, making it a mod that even experienced modders could tackle and enjoy. like the game it was based on, total alien takeover gave players the chance to change the entire world around them.
total alien takeover was followed by two half-life 2 mods, half-life 2: resident evil, and half-life 2: return to ravenholm. these were unique in that they gave players the chance to play as anyone they liked (be it a resurrected hessian mercenary, a psychotic hobo or a giant shark), with the obligatory appearance of the resident evil baddies thrown in. these mods were also, for the first time, using the source engine, a highly advanced game engine that could support high-quality modding.
equipped items can be swapped out in-game. here you see mario’s green bandanna replaced by a red one, while his hat takes on the shape of a kiss with a heart. of course, theres no picture the retro world hat, but thats probably for the best.
