the most interesting aspect of the multiplayer game in the brothers in arms series is that you can play off of the enemy’s perspective as well as your own. when you step into a controlled enemy tank, you can use your machine gun to suppress the enemy wherever you see him, and your teammates will act as secondary sources of damage when you engage a target. you’ll also see a display of your current health, ammo, and armor status. when you’re out of ammo or out of health, you’ll automatically bleed out, but you can keep battling through this by walking up to an enemy to distract him for a few seconds. you can also place a “flashbang” on an enemy soldier, causing an explosion when he looks away from it. players will even yell out things like “gotcha!” or “i’m alive!” in response to such actions, and they’ll also look really, really freaked out. this feature may add an extra level of strategy and can make the game feel a bit more intense in terms of player action, but it’s also really, really unrealistic. your men will also yell out surprised or, worse, confused comments whenever the player takes a shot at a player that’s supposed to be down. all of this adds a welcome bit of heart-pounding intensity to an otherwise serious and realistic game.
if you’ve played full spectrum warrior, brothers in arms should be pretty easy to pick up. it plays similarly to the other versions of the game, with the xbox and pc versions standing out as the most polished. single-player mode offers five levels for you to play through, each with three objectives to accomplish. these objectives range from clearing the level of hostiles to destroying a ground-mounted machine gun to destroying two bunkers within a certain amount of time. in the xbox and pc versions of the game, you have the option to play the campaign solo or as a squad leader. if you choose the latter, it involves taking control of one of your squad’s members as you play through the game, and the plot eventually takes a backseat to the overall gameplay. this feature is present in the ps2 version, but players can also freely switch between either solo or squad elements at any point during the game. you’ll see the level number on your health bar, and enemies will refer to you as “the squad leader.” enemy placement will change slightly depending on the situation, as will their reactions to seeing you or your element. the overall feel of this mode is fairly solid, but the overall presentation is somewhat lackluster. the game lacks vibrant colors and doesn’t have much in the way of a scenic backdrop. the characters, both friendly and enemy, are also made up of various-colored pixelated shapes. it’s a very low-fi look. on the plus side, the icons over enemy positions are very easy to recognize and are very helpful in keeping track of your units, while another helpful feature is the uniform color coding for most of the weapons. there’s nothing quite as “kinetic” in brothers in arms as the action-oriented and humorous full spectrum warrior, but fans of the series may still enjoy the squad-based elements of the game, particularly if they haven’t played any of the other brothers in arms titles.
brothers in arms is not a new franchise but i just never thought i would get this far into one. with a couple of very memorable sequences in the campaign and a fun multiplayer mode, the playstation 2 brothers in arms manages to satisfy the shooter fan and sell me on its world war ii period-set theme. as long as you don’t expect brothers in arms to be battlezone in disguise, you’ll be pretty satisfied with the experience. i’m glad that brothers in arms captures the essence of a military squad leader’s life during the world war ii campaign, but i would like to see some more traditional warfare and strategy elements added to the game. on the other hand, there are enough unique components in the gameplay that brothers in arms will appeal to most gamers of all skill levels. i would recommend the playstation 2 brothers in arms over the xbox or pc versions as long as you can live with the ps2’s dated visuals, dated user interface, some minor glitches in the audio, and occasional framerate drop.
that brothers in arms is quite the pleasant surprise. it’s the kind of shooter that old-school gamers could appreciate, but it’s also the kind of game that ought to be played by anybody who has dreams of driving some jerries before breakfast, and who likes an extra few minutes in their day. it doesn’t ask for a new name, a new website, a new game. it’s the same great wwii shooter we’ve been dying for and that we can already play in a darn good package on the playstation 2. brothers in arms doesn’t shout about it’s presence any louder than the other new and old-school games fighting for time and sales. but it’s clear that arma makes more realistic war games, and that this, this is a game that we can honestly shout about. and it works!
