this chapter starts from a horrific period of the partition riots, when a few hundred muslims were slaughtered by the forces of britishers in mumbai. this chapter chronicles the life of pandurang sangawikar, who was in pune at that time, and who with his friends took refuge in the home of a wealthy man on the fort area of pune. this friend was from east india company. he helps the refugees to survive at his place. this friend also tells them to stay there, as it was only a safe place for people to hide for a while. he also tells them that the britishers are in control of the city and they could trust no one, they should beware of their act. the city was in chaos as there had been lots of killings, looting and arson. the next few days were the worst days of pandurang sangawikar’s life.
chapter seven, the last in the book deals with the problems of the youth in the contemporary world where his destiny lies. his chapter begins and ends with a philosophical narration, describing how he thinks life is, how he thinks it should be and how he would like to be!
in the first part of the book, phetem narrates his life and his childhood up to the age of eight in the kalchi village, where he lives and works as an agricultural labourer for a year. the second part of the book begins with his ten years in pune and the disaster he experiences there. the third part comes with his six years stay in the village and the last part in goa, where he spends two years and narrates the whole book here. he reaches his conclusion with the conclusion of his life. he ends his life and studies as a farmer in the village, helps his father in cultivating sugar cane and thereby attaining his life’s goal.
