when i wrote the book the dao of kung fu back in 2005, the general public had only recently begun to hear about the dao of kung fu. this was especially true in the united states, where the idea of the dao of kung fu was considered a mystical, chinese religious belief. i was inspired to write the book when the public began asking me questions about the dao of kung fu, and i found that many people knew very little about the dao of kung fu.

the book describes the history and philosophy of the dao of kung fu, and how the art has been used to fight in self-defense, and how the dao of kung fu has influenced other martial arts such as boxing and kung fu. the book also includes information on how the dao of kung fu has influenced other sports such as fencing, stick fighting, and capoeira. the book begins with a short history of the dao of kung fu and how it came to be.
there were a number of ways in which i approached the vita nuova. i start with my introduction to the work, which set up the context and purpose for the book. next i presented a brief history of the work, which gave the reader a general sense of the intellectual and political milieu that vico inhabited. the third step was to give a general overview of the structure of the work, which would help the reader understand the complex organization of the vita nuova. finally, i presented the order in which the vita nuova is composed and the connections between the various sections.
however, there is evidence to suggest that vico’s study of roman law was not through this association. in the mid-1790s, london became a hotbed of revolution. this included the french revolution in 1792 and the repression of the revolution by william pitt in 1793. during this time, vico, perhaps motivated by a desire to hide from mobs, took up residence in italy. he lived in pisa from 1797 to 1799 and then in como (where he also taught) from 1799 to 1801. vico began working with the french government in 1793, when he began researching an outline of his principe.
the problem with saying that “if you have joy you have virtue” is that joy can be a fleeting quality. during those moments when you are joyful, does that count as virtue? every era in history seems to have been characterized by different expressions of virtue. when i was a boy, young men were required by law to wear a top hat during the winter, regardless of the weather. today, young men are expected to wear a top hat, even in a humid or snowy environment, under penalty of not being considered a “boy” in the eyes of a women. there is a difference in this respect. today, we think that a man wearing a top hat is worthy of respect because he is “smart”. but in the past, being seen as “smart” was a sign of having integrity. young men would wear their hats to separate themselves from the lower classes. today, to be seen as “cautious” is to be seen as “not irresponsible”. in ancient times, the virtue of “caution” might have meant that an individual was “prudent” and a sign of integrity. it might have meant that a man with the courage to take charge when the order of things became unbalanced would be the one who had the greatest ability to change things.
