another massive percussion library from never lost music. this time our heroes are hans zimmer and nathan east who were asked by the composer to re-create the most iconic percussion from his grammy award winning score for dunkirk. over 20 tracks all made with careful attention to detail. percussion is a key part of this film. i think that is often overlooked and under-used in film scores and i wanted this library to give an opportunity to work with these sounds and feel the power and impact of a big live drum line.
while material from the hollywood orchestra block features a 60-piece core ensemble, with additional material from jack dejohnette on drums, dave fisher on percussion, mike mainieri on vibes, and howard johnston on congas. but the focus is on the main rhythm section and the addition of a full percussion track to hz percussion (rather than a mere submix) is a testament to the quality of the london percussionists, and also to the recording technology at spitfire.
Towards the end of the demo here there is an extra percussion track where the strikes of the timpani player are mixed together with the other percussionists, creating an almost brickwork sound. This was something of an experiment. In the end the trumpet I was using was too loud for the mix, giving a more direct sound, but I also felt that it was appropriate for the music being played, so I left it in. I wouldnt recommend simply adding more and more brass to a song to make it more heavy, but I would say that the fact that the sound was quite thick also gave the song a bit of a meatier feel than the originals and thus perhaps the type of feel that Hans wants.
There is another percussion track that has a very rough feel, I think this is intended to mimic what Im hearing in Hanss brain when he is composing. Of course its impossible to feel this in real life, but its fascinating, perhaps to a composer, to hear your work in such a raw state. In theory you could also listen to the track on loop and not want to touch it until you were so sick of the way it sounded that you had to do something to it. But I know that theres much more to composing than just adding effects in the last track, so I think its more of an interesting curiosity than a practical one.
The final thing I wanted to comment on here was the fact that its a non-native source, a FLAC as opposed to the usual MP3 or OGG. It is not out of place with Hanss ongoing fascination with FLAC, which features heavily in his work and this may cause some users to consider re-mapping their FLAC library. I find the FLAC version of this library a bit easier to go through on my system, not sure why that is, but it may be nothing more than familiarity.
