I mentioned a moment ago that The Little Things is a movie on the verge of greatness, but that takes the film in very different directions and the first third ends up feeling like a step too far. The best thing about the movie is that it spends time exploring how police work feels to each of its leads, but that also seems like one of the two biggest strengths of the movie. When the story shifts gears entirely, it feels like theres something missing there and the movie goes looking for it.

If Denzel was cut off by his co-stars in the end of The Book of Eli, here he gets a pass because we actually get to see the story that would have happened had he stayed on the path, as opposed to the movie that he ends up going. The result is an ending that feels far more daring than the lead-up to it and gives us something to compare the rest of the movie to. This is only a minor quibble, of course, but I can see how some people would be bothered by it, especially if that ending is the only one that was possible. As Denzel and Leto are wont to do, theyre fitting in with the trends of the contemporary thriller, but The Little Things never goes too far with it. Just like those other films, its disappointing when it comes to the character-building side of things. Everything about it is pretty damn good, but there are some glaring problems with the particulars.

the real stars of this film are its performances. washington is always a good leading man, and he plays deacon beautifully, but its his turn as sparma that really turns the little things into something greater than the sum of its parts. he makes the character so vivid and so distinctive that it feels like sparma is really in the room with us, watching what goes on. malek also does a great job as sparma, giving the character an engaging charisma that feels completely real. also noteworthy is the strong work from mueller and tursi, who have small parts in the film but make huge contributions to it with their work.
the little things has a perfectly crafted structure and a great feel for its central mystery. at the same time, the film is very ambitious in the way that it makes deacons personal quest feel like a plot point rather than a macguffin, and it gives the film a touch of style that gives the proceedings a much more modern feel. it also happens to be one of the best thrillers of the year.
afterward, they didnt know what to do, and then their conscience was put in chains. this was not a good thing. the worst of it is that they are corrupt and miserable, and they are completely demoralized, and they are not united, and they are unorganized. the country is completely disorganized, and the government is completely incompetent, and the people have nothing.
the night stalker is one of those rare cases where i felt like i had a pretty good grasp on the material and the story. as i mentioned, it was a project that was probably written way back in the 1980s, and if it hadn’t been for the fact that the original wasn’t that great, i would have been perfectly fine with the way it turned out. so i had a pretty good idea of what i was getting into, and by the end, i couldn’t help but wish that the film had been better. the night stalker isn’t the best serial killer movie, but it sure does provide a few chuckle-inducing moments. its certainly a better movie than the one with the same name, and its a lot more fun than the other night stalker movies either. its a fun little ride that doesn’t try too hard, and it never really takes itself too seriously, which is a major plus. its not as bleak or as morose as some of the older thrillers, but its also not as light as the newer stuff either. it has something for everyone, and that makes it a good time to be had by all.
