The OMAP 4470is a fourth generation SoC (System on Chip) developed byTexas Instruments(TI) for use in mobile phones and tablets. The45 nmchip includesdual ARM Cortex-A9 CPU coresrunning at1.3 GHz up to 1.8 GHzon an ARM v7 instruction set and ARM NEON SIMD (Single instruction, multiple data) engine.

Amazon started building ebook readers in 2007 to support one of its core businesses (remember, Amazon started as an online book store). Later, it branched out into making Android tablets, in part to get into the app store business, but also to support its streaming service. The original Amazon Kindle Fire used a TI OMAP, as did the Fire HD.

Imagination Technologies really has been on a roll here lately. When we saw the original OMAP 4-based Fire tablets last summer, we knew that they had a very bright future ahead for being the foundation of upcoming Android tablets. Then we saw the OMAP 4-based Nexus 7 / 7 Tablets in late last year, and again we felt that they would be a force to be reckoned with. Now the new OMAP 4460 based Galaxy Nexus is being released, and it just keeps getting better and better.

It seems that Samsung wanted to guarantee a low-cost phone even at a high volume with the Galaxy Nexus. They figured that they would sell them at a really low price ( $350-$400 at most from what I’ve heard), and sell them at a volume that would ensure continued support of the phone. I don’t know if this actually works for them, but it seems to be working for HTC right now.

As for why Motorola chose to go with OMAP 4 instead of going with Krait and a new OMAP 4470, I suspect it has something to do with the software stack already being optimized for OMAP 4. For that matter, I’m sure that it doesn’t give Motorola any advantage for the RAZR HD and RAZR M (since this SoC is meant for much smaller devices, like the Galaxy Nexus). Also, Motorola is being much more aggressive on its developer relations than Google is on its retail sales of Nexus devices. It seems that Motorola is really just being more direct and upfront with its Android development. That approach could be a bad thing if it turns into a bad reputation for Motorola, however I just think it is a strategy that needs to be approached with caution. I really like Motorola, but I also feel that at times, they are at the mercy of their OEM partners.

Where do the various Android and Windows Phone OSs fit in with this? It’s the typical strategy for TI – build a better platform, and try to get OEMs to pre-install it on their products. More and more OEMs are choosing TI for this, as they are a lot cheaper than the original Samsung SoCs. In the end, TI has money to burn, and wants to make sure that there is someone to buy their stuff from. In this way, they have found a lot of success with the OMAP platform – Symbian isn’t the same any more, they still have a large user base of Windows Mobile 7 phones out there, but they are not all that expensive, and may even be replaceable. This is what Samsung has used a lot of their budget on, since the consumer products market is pretty much dead.

We’ll also see a lot of interesting stuff at Computex in a week or two. If you’re wondering why anyone would want the Playbook, it’s partly for the enormous success TI is having with tablets of late. This is also to be expected. TI has always been moving towards in-house components, the company that put the OMAP4560 in the original Motorola Droid Razr was acquired by TI a while ago.
The OMAP 4430 is a fairly standard, yet full featured dual-core ARM Cortex A9 SoC. You get two A9 cores complete with MPE (NEON support), behind a shared 1MB L2 cache. The SoC features two 32-bit LPDDR2 memory channels as well. The GPU is provided by Imagination Technologies in the form of a PowerVR SGX 540.
