in this very first edition of notebook, we’re helping our attention span with an exclusive interview with a man who has certainly earned his nickname. john terlesky, aka the mysterious brother jt, is the founder, resident musical genius, and visionary behind thrill jockey records. but he’s not some new-age hippie: his various projects span world music, rock, hip hop, punk, jazz, electronics, and pop/rock. he is the founder and producer of the legendary thrill jockey record company, whose roster, which has included bands such as sonic youth, beck, mogwai, and sunn o))) and experimental music projects like the original sins, is considered one of the best underground/indie labels in the united states. he has also produced albums for yeah yeah yeahs, ola luna, bassnectar, the hold steady, the faint, teenage fanclub, the strokes, sean lennon, richard thompson, baby snakes, and ani difranco. thrill jockey, which also publishes books, issues the acclaimed jockey’s choice series of the best albums of all time, is also the first and largest american record label to move to independent distribution only. his new “full” version of tornado jockey is a sign of the changing times that have swept the music world. we asked him a few questions about the game, its predecessors, the future and musical inspirations. so sit back, enjoy the interview and let’s be friends!
john terlesky, aka the mysterious john terlesky, has returned with a mind-palace of an album entitledtornado juice. to be released march of 2018 on thrill jockey,tjwas recorded atmagic door, a new studio in montclair nj, byray ketchem, who produced the original sins’bethlehemalbum in 1996. this was a departure for the brother, who hadn’t darkened the door of a real studio since 2007’sjelly roll gospel, preferring the freedom of recording at his band’s practice space and overdubbing at home. when i heard ray was opening a new studio i had to try it out, he recounted in a recent interview. aside from his sick mic collection there’s a comfort level with ray i’m not sure i could find elsewhere. he knows music and he knows me, and i think that comes through in the tracks.
so, this is how it came to be that i worked on what i believe will be my final album, tornado, not as a producer but as a singer and lyricist. much of the stuff in this interview had my first hand experience behind it; the songs i worked on were largely accumulated from studio jams with a dozen different band members. thanks for playing along with me, codies, and, er, sorry for the delay.
as your bases swell in size your tornado gathers power. you can increase its size, potential by spending points on the “arrow” facility, which forces power stored in the tornado to turn to kinetic energy. all kinds of debris can be sucked in and shot out of the tornado as well.
in tornado alley, youll set down traps in strategic locations all over a level to eliminate opponents. you can also set up a chain reaction of traps or customize your own timing sequence to create your own scenario. riddle me this, but how do you trigger a trap without setting it off? answer: teleporter
teleporter can be used on any power-up that sends “power” straight to your tornado. a power-up that sends power to your tornado is an active power-up. teleporter can be used on nearly any power-up, but its best used on items that fire projectiles, such as explosives and traps. you can use teleporter on any active power-up, but its best used on those that shoot or launch projectiles.
tornado juice is a physics-based game so not everything has an exact scientific explanation, some things just feel right. it felt like a natural progression for me to create my first music-based game. the challenge was to create the kind of music that just felt like music that inspired me to do what i love. i hope you enjoy it as much as i did making it.
