I do believe that the actual text is a little too dense to use as a textbook. My students needed more time to digest the logic when they started using it as a textbook because logic and critical thinking can be hard to understand for less than philosophically trained students. If the book had less text, I think more exercises to reinforce the material might have been helpful. There are many ways to include exercises in a textbook. One would need to be creative.
I have read a lot of the reviews of this book on amazon and other sites. Most reviewers are very critical of the depth of the book. I also think that the text is heavy on examples and that some of the examples could be a little more accessible to students. I’m not a philosophically trained person, so I’m not much help to the reviewer on this matter. But this book has been used in several courses around the country with really excellent reviews. So it must work for some students. I think the book is accessible enough for a lot of students. In my personal opinion, the author has used the text well. I like it. I had no problems with any of the exercises. So I recommend this book. I do think you would have to be pretty dedicated to this book to use it for a semester-long course. One would have to read a bit of the text every day and come up with your own examples to use. In my opinion, this is not a book for people who are just looking for a great logic textbook.
For the last 5 years, I have been teaching a first year Logic course at a large state school. The textbook is Van Cleave’s Introduction to Logic and Critical Thinking; the authors are A. P. George and John David Hughes. The year I have been teaching it, the text is online and inexpensive for students to view. There was one year when I was required to teach the course with book plus DVD combo (paperwork version, not e-book). I was happy to have the book, but I found that the DVDs were not very helpful. In some ways, they were helpful. But some of the DVDs lacked exercises. While the book is lengthy, I consider this text to be essential for a first-year logic course.
