one important detail that many people do not know is that s&w manufactured revolvers in a wide variety of models, many of which were different from each other. the s&w 686 was a stainless revolver, but smith manufactured numerous variants of the 686 revolver, some of which were of different barrel lengths, frame sizes and other characteristics. i assume you are referring to a model 686-4. the model 686 was introduced in 1986 and was discontinued in 2002. the model 686-4 was introduced in 1987, but was discontinued in 1999.
most of the guns made in the 1986 and 1987 model years are not of interest to us collectors. the guns made in 1988 to 1999 are of more interest to us collectors. because of the very low number of guns made in this range, there is no chance of finding a period box with a proper serial number. however, we do have a small number of boxes made in this range, and they are made of a different type of cardboard than the boxes made for guns made in the 1986 to 1987 model years. these boxes have a black background and the serial number is printed on the front of the box. these boxes can be identified by the black background and the absence of the s&w trademark.
