there’s nothing special to it. your computer is running a version of windows, and it has an internet connection. but there are some important caveats. for starters, this test is only valid for the version of windows you’re running. it doesn’t work for xp, vista or windows 7. if your computer is running an old operating system, such as windows 98 or windows me, you’ll have to call in an expert.
even if you’re running windows 7, you’ll find that any tests we do won’t work on your computer. for example, if your computer is configured to be a domain controller (which is recommended but not required) or has a hardware firewall, it’s very difficult to test how windows, and the software you run, are behaving. you’ll have to call an expert for advice.
many of the “viruses” we found are, in fact, much more likely to be associated with hardware issues or issues caused by the software itself. but if they are, the test can confirm if you are at risk from them. if you are, the test will point out how vulnerable you are. after all, a test isn’t a virus. it’s a computer program. and to a computer program, a virus is just another file. all we’re doing is looking at files.
unfortunately, this test takes a long time to run. it’s usually much faster than you think. once the test completes, you’ll find a file of the same name as the original virus. you’ll also find a file called nbtscan.exe which will give you statistics about the test. if you’re having problems with your antivirus product, you’ll find the details in the file.
these tips should help you clean up your system after the test. you should be able to delete nbtscan.exe, the file named after the test, and the original eicar file you started the test with. if you still have trouble, contact us, and we’ll walk you through the process.
