the most interesting aspect of the new need for speed in terms of the game itself is that it does away with the restrictive need to use the pc to get the best result. the ps3 is essentially a powerful console that plays games and lets you record and upload gameplay. and though the game looks slightly more refined on the ps3, it is clearly still a cut above the xbox version. i couldnt get any of the pc visuals to look even close to as nice as the ps3 version. then again, i was having trouble getting that to look good on the ps2, either. so theres no point making a comparison. the pc version was also more stable in terms of frame rate when i played it, and the pc version looked better in terms of general quality. it really seemed to me as though its more optimised for the ps3.
some of the most fun in hot pursuit comes from the way that the game lets you slide the race into the world’s most absurd situations. need for speed hot pursuit is an all-out, high-speed, high-fidelity affair that will have you singing from the rooftops. its cars, tracks, and races are all finely detailed, and while the game’s visuals are smooth and well-suited to the genre, they are also highly variable. hot pursuit’s visual quality is on par with burnout 3: takedowns when the game is run at a lower resolution, but as soon as you crank the setting up to 720p, hot pursuit’s visuals can either look gorgeous or downright ugly. it’s not too unusual to come across a level in which one or more of the cars in your race has a frame rate spike, and as the game’s physics aren’t always perfect, you’ll often find that cars don’t stay in one place when they’re going around a track at full speed. this isn’t a really a problem, though, and if you want a really fast and high-quality racing game, hot pursuit is definitely the one to play.
