the difficulty arises when any complex type is used that has sub-elements which need to be allocated as well. for example, a structure whose union member value is struct value, and whose elements include data and pointer members, each of which must be allocated. in this case, the alloc function returns a pointer to the structure (or to the first element in the structure if the structure has no elements) because it does not know which element is in memory after it has allocated space for the first one.
