the small satellite program provides opportunities to enhance a range of near-term space system capabilities through miniaturization, power and capability generation, and propulsion. this requirement aims to support the development of spacecraft that can play an important role in nasa as well as commercial missions.
the program seeks to grow the knowledge, capability, and competitiveness of small satellite systems and their engineering, development, integration, and operation to help build a substantial portfolio of innovative smallsat systems.
a successful program will enable the development of a generation of smallsats that can extend their capabilities into further space and enable them to operate in other applications such as earth-based solar power as well as other near-earth propulsion and energy applications.
a goal of this research is to derive a nonlinear theory from a linear theory and develop a linearization technique for the thermal-hydraulic modeling of the combustor. this is in order to obtain a linearized heat transfer, mass-transfer, chemical kinetics, and gas-dynamics model with desirable properties. the objective is to derive a suitable set of coupled nonlinear equations whose solution can be used to obtain the steady-state nonlinear thermal-hydraulic model from the steady-state linear thermal-hydraulic model. such a model would be useful for the design and analysis of combustor systems which operate at large temperature gradients or physical/geometric deformations, and for the design of large-scale combustion systems. additionally, the deriving of a nonlinear theory will provide a path to extend the linear theory to more complicated flow regimes, and/or dynamic combustion systems.
determination of the environment and the boundary condition for a vehicle. this includes the spacecraft, solar cell array, and related equipment. a trajectory and mission analysis is done for the particular end mission and also for a back-up mission. this analysis results in the derivation of a complete set of environmental, thermal, solar, and power parameters. the vehicle is modeled, evaluated for its performance, and the goal of the analysis is to show that it is feasible with the design to perform a mission with specified parameters.
one requirement for the development of a reusable space transportation system is its capability to autonomously rendezvous and dock with an orbiting space platform. such missions will involve transportation of cargo from earth to distant stations in an orbit, during which the space vehicle must autonomously rendezvous with the station and dock with it. for the development of such missions, it is required to develop automatic rendezvous and docking algorithms. rendezvous algorithms use sensors, instrumentation, and controlled systems to determine and track an orbiting space object, and to make it possible for a target spacecraft to safely dock with it. docking algorithms make use of sensors, instrumentation, and controlled systems to dock a spacecraft with the orbiting station.
