the first incarnation of the series which really dug its teeth into 3d play, super mario 64 felt like such a step forward in gameplay and design. after being frustrated by the lack of options in 2d, the spacious 3d world, and the new object mechanics came together to create the greatest mario game ever. its gotten better with each title, and is still the crown jewel of mario platformers.
mario bros. 3 was kind of a’meh.’ it was fun, for the most part, and it gave us a nice ‘hep’ hero to inhabit, but it’s not without its flaws; for a start, princess daisy was a bit of a disappointment and felt more like a pet of the plumber. the pacing is a bit uneven, the boss fights are a bit toned down (the first example, in fact, had a pace that’s very similar to super mario bros. 2) and while exploring the game’s optional worlds there’s a (very short) learning curve that you won’t find in the later entries. still, if you’re a big fan of the genre, it’s worth a look.
the real sequel to this fantastic platformer is super mario bros. 2 and, as with super mario bros. 3 , it was never released on any system outside of japan. the fact that super mario bros. 2 is this far down our core games list is a testament to the quality of the game, and one that tells us a great deal about the super mario bros. series that nintendo continue to export into other territories; this one is so much closer to being a classic than the confusing mario platformers that we’ve had in the west for so long. it may not be perfect, and it may be without the grandest castle of them all, but it’s a huge improvement on super mario bros. 3 in nearly every way. highly recommended, too.
the animal crossing series is a narrative-driven life simulator that rewards creating a living space you love in a game. that type of playful creativity is best suited to the switch and we’ve seen the evolution of that approach with modern offerings like fire emoji . it stands to reason that the most successful brand of this type of game would be the one with the most vivid and user-friendly engine, and that’s what nintendo has delivered with amiibo. this is a game so easy it needs no tutorial, so addictive that it becomes a family affair, and fun enough to be played by adults and kids alike. its quite simply the best game you never knew you wanted.
the game follows the adventures of a sentient figure that builds the world around him, and slowly becomes more and more superior. his name is ai and he is one of two characters that are based on him and i enjoyed his character immensely. after watching the live stream, i was very curious about the game’s backstory which i learned through multiple videos. the game at its heart follows the story of a boy named kukai and his mentor, an old man named mishka, who tries to train kukai to become “the greatest builder the world has ever seen.” i was also able to learn more about the different worlds. the first two are like side-scrolling games, where you have to traverse the world to gather items and build things. the third world is more like a 2d builder.
in the end, mario kart 8 deluxe was a super mario kart package, complete with a massive amount of content, refined visuals, and all the live-action cutscenes its well-known to offer. we’re at a point in gaming where the console manufacturers are focusing on the 2d, side-scroller mario kart games more than ever in the series before, and super mario kart 8 is a celebration of that despite being the third entry in the franchise (the first being super mario kart 7 for gamecube).
